Free Stuff in Vegas Today - 02/02/09
It’s Groundhog Day, also known as the calm after the Super Sunday storm here in Sin City.
By the way, those of us who live in Las Vegas don’t rely on Puxsutauwney Phil to signal the coming of spring. We have Mojave Max…or technically Mojave Max II.
The 65-year old male tortoise spent the final nine years of his life living in a special habitat at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Each year he would emerge from his burrow after his yearly brumation (the reptilian version of hibernation) to herald the beginning of spring and local school children competed in a contest to predict when he would wake up, usually sometime between mid-March and mid-April
Sadly, Max died of natural causes in July 2008 but in October a 10-pound, 19-year old successor was named to carry on the tradition. But this morning when Phil is pulled from his burrow and forced to look for his shadow, Mojave Max will be peacefully enjoying his final weeks of winter rest.
Now onto today’s freebies…

Thanks! Now if I can talk my husband into going back!!! I had the best time! Stayed at The Venetian, met Wayne Brady, loved every minute.
So glad you enjoyed your trip! The Venetian is such a beautiful place and on the “must see” list when folks visit. Was lucky enough to see Wayne Brady’s very first show in Las Vegas at Paris several years back and loved it but haven’t yet seen his permanent show. Phantom is also fantastic if you’re into that sort of thing and it’s worth the price of admission to see the theater — truly awesome!
