Who knew boy bands would even stick around long enough to become man bands?
Las Vegas has already become a haven for classic crooners, still kicking ‘50’s do-wop groups and ’80’s hair bands. Now we can add former boy bands to the list.
First it was the New Kids on the Block with a comeback at Mandalay Bay in September after a 15-year hiatus. Maturity has its perks. The “kids” tour on a bus complete with stripper pole and the concert after party was held at Luxor’s popular LAX nightclub with a bevy of beautiful babes.
Not to be outdone, The Backstreet Boys are scheduled to perform at the Pearl at the Palms on Nov. 22 and rumors are swirling that they’ll return to host one of Las Vegas’ infamous New Year’s Eve celebrations at another off-strip casino.
Boyz II Men is the only group that anticipated the transition through puberty to all grown up and named themselves accordingly. That foursome is also currently touring but the closest they’ll come to Sin City is southern California.
Clearly it’s only a matter of time.

People are prone to think that Las Vegas is lacking in culture but the organizers of the annual CineVegas Film Festival have done their best to make sure that Sin City gets its fair share every summer.
Set to take place June 11-20, next year’s cinematic soiree will be hosted by the Palms Casino Resort and its movie house partner Brenden Theatres. The full schedule of events will be released at a later date and will include premieres, parties and red carpet ceremonies at various locations in the city.
The festival turns 11 years old in 2009 and since its inception has evolved into a highly anticipated avant-garde event that prides itself on presenting works that test the bounds of traditional cinema. Legendary filmmaker Dennis Hopper continues to hold the title of Chariman of the Creative Advisory Board and has been an advocate for the festival since he was honored in 2003 with the Marquee Award for lifetime achievement.
Films will be accepted in the categories of feature film, documentary, short film and Nevada filmmaking short with cash prizes totaling $14,000 up for grabs. Entries will be accepted from Dec. 1, 2008 to Mar. 1, 2009 through Withoutabox’s International Festival Submissions System at www.withoutabox.com

Several Las Vegas businesses plan to honor our nation’s military veterans with special events and promotions planned for Tuesday, Nov. 11 and the options range from totally the traditional to “only in Vegas”.
The festivities get underway with downtown’s annual Veterans Day Parade set to march north on 4th street from Garces to Ogden beginning at 10 a.m.
Dining discounts are popular and include Arizona Charlie’s Decatur and Arizona Charlie’s Boulder honoring vets with a free buffet. More free eats are available at South Point where a complimentary buffet is offered up to all active or retired military personnel plus one guest. Coast Casinos properties – Sam’s Town, Suncoast, The Orleans and Gold Coast – also invite military personnel to belly up to the buffet for free today and the El Cortez is giving away White Castle hamburgers game side to anyone playing slots and table games from noon to 6 p.m. Finally, Steiner’s – A Nevada Style Pub, is giving a 25 percent discount on all food items and non-alcoholic beverages at their W. Cheynne and N. Buffalo Dr. locations.
Gentlemens’ clubs love veterans, too and to show their patriotic pride Little Darlington and Déjà vu Showgirls are inviting vets to enjoy free admission, free food and free drinks all day.
The Erotic Heritage Museum on Industrial Road gets the nod for most creative tribute to the our men and women in uniform as they host Military Erotica Day from noon to midnight.
That’s Vegas, baby!
